30 Years involved in Community Media, first as director of OLON, the Dutch federation of community radio and TV, since 2008 as president of CMFE, the European network for community media. Do 'social' media replace 'traditional' mass media? Do they compete with or enhance each other? What is 'social' in 'social media' and how does this compare to the social aspect (concept of 'social gain') in community media ? Are 'traditional' media distribution systems (ether frequencies, cable channels, analogue and digital) still relevant?

Founding executive director Dirk Koning of the Grand Rapids Community Media Center telling the story of the story of being in a remote African village, where they were explaining the marvels of communications technology to the village leader; how with portable, solar-driven, low power radio stations and receivers villages could communicate; how through television villages could share messages; how satellites could bring the world to their doorsteps.
