Innovation and entrepreneurs

The future EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020 , is put in place to push stronger for innovation to enable growth and new jobs in Europe. In this context the workshop wants to shed light on two crucial ingredients of the innovation process: Entrepreneurship and partnerships for innovation.

This group aims then to cover issues related to innovation, such as:

And issues related to entrepreneurship, such as:

  • What are the necessary conditions for the entrepreneurs to be successful
  • How to carve out potential measures to refine the instruments of Horizon 2020?
  • Address topics like entrepreneur camps, mentoring, accelerators, incubators, talent and access to finance with a specific focus on web and ICT entrepreneurs and fast growing SMEs.
  • What do you think about a European Public-Private Partnership to support EU web enterpreneurs to start and grow their companies? Which services should be added to the Partnership?

UPDATE: Comment the draft working document on a EU strategy for web entrepreneurs

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Assembly.
If you feel lost in the many threads of the discussion? You can see the summary of the discussion so far here.

Are EU countries doubling their investment in R&D ICT?

osimod's picture
Submitted by osimod on Fri, 2012-05-11 15:22

The DAE action 55 states that Member States should double their investment in ICT research by 2020. We're doing a study for EC to assess this and we're gathering evidence to measure it.

In particular we'd like to gather your views on:
- Which country is increasing substantially the level of investment in ICT Research?
- Are there dedicated research programmes that you would indicate as best practice?
- What other inspiring initiative do you know to increase the investment in ICT RD (e.g. tax credits, clusters)?

Thanks! We'll report back on results.

Open innovation and social media

How do you see social media and social technologies to be deployed for the purpose of open innovation in a European context?

Some ideas are:
Providing a virtual infrastructure (being such a large region, virtual platforms offer a quick and cost-effective way to engage) and mine social data to discover market pull/market-driven innovations (very locally and therefore adaptive).

What are noteworthy examples of digitally supported open innovation in Europe?

Thank you

Focus on change instead of invention

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 11:58

Europe has losts its way. Our former strenghts where based on market value creation in constant competition.

This has been replaced by "managed citiziens and markets" which simply do not work.

My statement is not ideological but recognising the basic fact that especially bureuarats and commercial infrastructures foicus on controlling and preventing innovation rather than value creation.

Stanards are not designed to facilite change and innovation but to establish lock-in and kartel structures e.g. payments, mobile phones and eSignature.

Innovation & Digital: Faster, Better and Cheaper

Gianluigi Cuccureddu's picture
Submitted by Gianluigi Cuccureddu on Thu, 2012-05-03 09:11

If we know that the three things that are common across industries, types of organizations and so on is to be faster, better and cheaper than innovation needs to add to that.

How do you think digital/social media help innovation in being faster, better and cheaper in its output?

And what should the EC do to help?

ICT clusters in Europe: what should be done?

lpujol's picture
Submitted by lpujol on Wed, 2012-05-02 11:52

It is well known that clusters can create an effective innovation ecosystem in which new companies grow together and flourish more than they would do individually, mainly by sharing explicit and tacit knowledge. These clusters are geographically and sectorally concentrated.
"Between 30% and 40% of all employment is in industries that concentrate, or ‘cluster’, regionally."

And what about integrating learning into real RDI environments through Living Labs?

ana.garcia's picture
Submitted by ana.garcia on Thu, 2012-04-26 10:35

There is an interesting example of this integration of learning into real RDI environments in the Lutakko Living Lab (Jyväskylä, in central Finland) where user-led methodology is used to do it. Students are engaged in Living Lab projects/environments as learners, researches, innovators and entrepreneurs. It is also very interesting their Entrepreneur Centre of Excellence (http://www.tiimiakatemia.fi/en/) and the usage of Living Labs as a tool to support student incubation and start-ups.

Rio+20, green economy and youth entrepreneurship

Pierre-Antoine Ullmo's picture
Submitted by Pierre-Antoine Ullmo on Thu, 2012-06-21 07:47

The green economy is one of the core issues discussed at Rio+20. Our starting point is that the green economy can be part of and in certain conditions lead the transition path towards new paradigms for youth entrepreneurship.

But the contribution of the green economy for greater social cohesion, enhanced innovation and creativity is not (only) the creation of “green jobs” (we are speaking of a range of 60 million to 1,5 billion new jobs!)but the transformation of mindsets and attitudes on the job market and in the society as a whole.

Guadalinfo drives social innovation

Since 2009, the Red Guadalinfo is experiencing a restructuring process that was well defined by a few days ago the CEO of Consorcio Fernando de los Rios, Francisco Juan Delgado, in an article published on the website of the Assembly of the European Digital Agenda. We've gone from working to improve the digital skills of citizens and at the same time reducing the digital divide, to become true agents of social innovation.

Start-up Mecca is slightly moving from the Valley to the Alley http://mashable.com/2012/01/12/silicon-valley-alley-compariso/

It is widely known that the Valley grew from Stanford, but in fact was a determined proffesor, Frederick Terman http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Terman who encouraged his students to form their own companies (heard about Hewlett and Packard?).
