Dear DA12 contributors on Cloud topic.
Last year your inputs were very useful to help shaping the next steps of the Digital Agenda.
A lot has been going on since then: the European Commission issued the Communication "Unleashing the Potential of Cloud Computing in Europe" thus setting the strategy on this topic.
Also the discussion on the new EU Data Protection Package progressed through debate in the Parliament and the focus is now on a key enabler of cloud: fast and reliable broadband.

Dear DAA community, I hope debate can go on on this platform and I am interested in keeping it active, with particular reference to the Cloud group that I followed up more closely. With the European Cloud Strategy to be released soon (probably after summer holidays) and the recent publication of the ARTICLE 29 DATA PROTECTION WORKING PARTY Opinion 05/2012 on Cloud Computing, the European effort on Cloud has just begun and it will be value added for Europe to keep the DAA wide, interested and active community alive to continue the collaboration through open and fruitful discussion.

Looking through the cloud presentations, I cannot help but suggesting that this area is dominated by technology-push and wishfull dreams without sanety checks,

I do not see a single slide depicting how people can remain in control of value chains in cloud - they all focus on tracking, profiling and managing people and processes in cloud.

The consequence being a MASSIVE SHIFT in power structures from people and companies to infrastructure. From the realworld to destabilizing power concentration in the digital space.

The biggest public cloud is delivered by Amazon, an American company that delivers its cloud infrastructure through data centres in North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

The biggest open source clouds (Eucalyptus and OpenStack) were originally developed in the United States, and US contributors continue to dominate the code contributions.

But Europe does have plenty of home-grown cloud solutions.

Are SMBs gaining significant IT security benefits from using the cloud?

A recent Microsoft Study ( http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/Press/2012/May12/05-14SMBSecuritySur... ) shows that 35 percent of U.S. SMBs surveyed have experienced noticeably higher levels of security since moving to the cloud. In addition, 32 percent say they spend less time worrying about the threat of cyberattacks. U.S. SMBs using the cloud also spend 32 percent less time each week managing security than companies not using the cloud.

SMEs are continuously more and more aware of the benefits of cloud services for their business.
However they are still largely reluctant in intensive cloud adoption.
As the IDC Study (http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/study-cc_en.html) confirms, there are still several barriers in wide adoption of cloud computing by SMEs in Europe.
