Social Media

This workshop explores the use and potential of social media. It will identify areas where common EU action on social media would benefit employability, jobs and growth. It will address the three perspectives of the social media economy: businesses, web entrepreneurship with job creation potential and public sector.

Social media is impacting business and public services in the workplace - in internal processes and in external interaction with customers. Its use is becoming a strategic choice for an increasing number of organisations. Social networks platforms are increasingly becoming part of many user-facing applications.

Social media platforms allow the emergence of a new type of entrepreneurs (apptrepreneurs) to develop apps and use marketing, payment and security features offered by the platform provider.

Social media enables more direct citizen and stakeholder involvement and promises more efficient delivery of public services.

These factors have the potential to create new jobs and economic growth particularly amongst unemployed youth and graduates. Facebook’s economic impact is worth an estimated £12.7bn to the EU and Switzerland, supporting over 232,000 jobs (Deloitte, 2012).

Who say that Social media has to be dis-empowering?

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Tue, 2012-06-05 08:46

Social networks are a core fabric of any society. The question is not social network or not, but how.

However, business discussions focus on social media as a hunting ground for customers.

Social media business case focus on invasive profiling abusing (secondarily using) personal data.

Here lies the caveat - the identified consumer is a transparant consumer and as such a dis-empowered consumer.

I wonder why social media has to be seen as a tool to work against empowerment?

Transforming business with social media will #FAIL, if they don't get the education

serviceplease20's picture
Submitted by serviceplease20 on Sun, 2012-06-03 18:16

For there to be a wider acceptance of social media use by businesses then one cannot ignore the biggest blockers out there; the decision makers themselves. Our initiatives will fail without remembering to educate those making the decisions.

Having spent the last 2 years crossing many countries of the EU talking to medium, large and very large businesses about how they could use of social media to further their own interests. The sessions most often begin with an education of what and why we are talking about this and why this is not about their personal Facebook updates.

Social Media as platform for all DA Groups

AxelS's picture
Submitted by AxelS on Sat, 2012-06-02 23:03

The noise level of the #da12social group is high and the activity level even higher. Obviously the group is using social media not only to create awareness but also to crowd source information, research, and collaborate in the project.

What do you think about helping all other Digital Agenda groups leveraging those tools and techniques to grow attention and gain momentum?

Here is a proposal: http://www.digitalagendastrategy.eu/social-media-as-a-da-platform/

Social Media as Marketing Tools

E. Constantinides's picture
Submitted by E. Constantinides on Mon, 2012-05-28 23:26

With the Social Media becoming an indispensable part of peoples' social life and given their important contribution to customer / citizen empowerment, many businesses are trying to hastily incorporate these as part of their marketing strategy. However opening an Facebook page and a twitter account is not enough.

The Right to be forgotten needs enforcement

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-25 11:01

A pre-requisite for the "Right to be forgotten" is the right not to have been identified in the first place. The second you are identified, data control transfers forever and nothing can trustworthy change this.

Being identified in social networks have grave consequences as it prevents citizens from keeping circles separate from commercial or other misuse - nomatter if the counterparties know her offline or the polices might need to know in special situations.

Hi All,

Forgive me if I missed the scope of this project by Europe and even EU can mean different things to different people. It would be good to know how many and which countries this work is targeting? For example are countries that are hoping to join EU supposed to be takin part here? For example Turkey?

Cross-lingual to connect social media across the languages

marko_grobelnik's picture
Submitted by marko_grobelnik on Mon, 2012-05-07 13:22

Cross-lingual technologies is a field where information is transferred across the languages without a text being translated. In a way, these technologies enable (a) to connect languages without pre-built language technology infrastructure with major languages, and (b) to address information from a long tail of cultures and languages which are not easily accessible.

This is an uncovered market with lots of application opportunities and since EU is investing in the area I see good chance EU could have serious lead in the area.

What does "Patient empowerment" mean to you? As a person, as a patient, as a relative to a chronic diseased person, as a caregiver, as a child of a sick person, as a sick person, as a parent of a sick kid, etc what does it mean to you? How would you see yourself "empowered? Is Social Media helping you facing your illness? How? What did healthcare social media already bring to you?

Understanding the new roles and professions in social media.

nabeth.thierry's picture
Submitted by nabeth.thierry on Thu, 2012-04-19 21:21

Setting-up social media systems and in particular technologies is not a sufficient condition of their success. Social media systems needs to be operated to make them live (and it is not only a matter of providing technical assistance, but also in engaging people, resolving conflicts).

New roles and professions have emerged such as social media managers, community managers, digital "curators", etc.

I have several questions in relation of these new functions.

Social media for e-accessibility

Paul Timmers's picture

Can social media approaches provide for a step change in the provision of web-accessibility? An example of such an approach is FixTheWeb, http://www.fixtheweb. Does it work? Can the EU do more? See also the discussion posted at the Digital Public Services and Sustainability section on Accessibility and Digital Public Services, http://daa.ec.europa.eu/group/15/content.

Project: Roubaix Connects

Roubaix Connects is a new service that stimulates new social relationships in the urban ambiance.

Exploring tangible and intangible strategies that extrapolates the physical built environment Roubaix Connects aims to give voice to the citizens of Roubaix in public spaces, improving local social capital and urban quality of life.

Roubaix Connects is a platform that interfaces between online and offline communications fed by the inhabitants and visitors of Roubaix. Display screens and a ‘soapbox’[1], are the elements that support programmed and spontaneous public events.

The aim is to bridge the digital Roubaix (as feeds from twitter, facebook, blogs, such as LeBlog2Roubaix), with the physical Roubaix, the public spaces and hubs.

The digital screens placed in public spaces display information that is gathered and aggregated by an online platform—that works as a virtual town square[2].

Users can also input information onto the platform, which is displayed on those screens placed at hubs along paths of travel connecting public sites with transportation hubs.

The physical platform is called “The ‘soapbox”[1] which is a toolkit that supports programmed and spontaneous public expression, that can range from poetry declamation to political discourse. Those public narratives empower local individuals, as well as increase the sense of ownership of public spaces.
