Social Media

This workshop explores the use and potential of social media. It will identify areas where common EU action on social media would benefit employability, jobs and growth. It will address the three perspectives of the social media economy: businesses, web entrepreneurship with job creation potential and public sector.

Social media is impacting business and public services in the workplace - in internal processes and in external interaction with customers. Its use is becoming a strategic choice for an increasing number of organisations. Social networks platforms are increasingly becoming part of many user-facing applications.

Social media platforms allow the emergence of a new type of entrepreneurs (apptrepreneurs) to develop apps and use marketing, payment and security features offered by the platform provider.

Social media enables more direct citizen and stakeholder involvement and promises more efficient delivery of public services.

These factors have the potential to create new jobs and economic growth particularly amongst unemployed youth and graduates. Facebook’s economic impact is worth an estimated £12.7bn to the EU and Switzerland, supporting over 232,000 jobs (Deloitte, 2012).

Social Media is Going Corporate [Infographic]

The following infographic was compiled by MBAPrograms.com and it showcases some recent and interesting findings on how corporations are tackling social media. Initially skeptical of it’s use for business purposes, it appears many have adopted the two-way communication mindset during this modern age of information and relationship building.

Thank you and keep the conversation going

Hello everyone who contributed for the Social Media workshop #DA12social on Thursday in Brussels and to the many more who participated via Twitter and the live webstream. There was some great content created over the day.

It would be terrific if the conversation kept going...

The use of social media for business, government and as an industry in itself is in its infancy. We are all learning its true capability for transformation so it becomes vital that we share our knowledge and ideas so that we can make best use of it to benefit our economies.

THANK YOU

A big thanks to all of you who participated in the workshops yesterday and to those who worked from their home base.

#da12social was trending on Twitter yesterday and we all created some serious awareness for what the EU Commission is doing and how we all can make a difference.

Obviously we had opponents, people who disagreed with content or style but in the end we came farther than most of us including myself imagined when we started.

Certifications on SME and SMC

We all have agreed that educating consultants throughout Europe is a base. Since there must be some kind of certifications on these qualifications, in Basque Country we do have ESI (http://www.esi.es/), European Software Institute, created in 1993 by the European Commission with the support of the Basque Government, is now a Division of TECNALIA, one of the leading European research institutes.
It's first partner in Europe for the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI).

Group 7 remit: A Policy for SME APP Developers - protect & promote

Based on the one of the Brainstorming questions:

What should such a policy Do to protect Apps developers ?

I propose the following:-

1) Reduce EU Patent Fees for SME's with less than 10 employees
> most Start-Ups only have two !

2) Provide SME's as above with Free Legal Aid in EU to defend their Patents
> we have it for illeged criminals, why not illeged Enterprenures

Transforming business with social media will #FAIL, if they don't get the education

serviceplease20's picture

For there to be a wider acceptance of social media use by businesses then one cannot ignore the biggest blockers out there; the decision makers themselves. Our initiatives will fail without remembering to educate those making the decisions.

Having spent the last 2 years crossing many countries of the EU talking to medium, large and very large businesses about how they could use of social media to further their own interests. The sessions most often begin with an education of what and why we are talking about this and why this is not about their personal Facebook updates.

Extraordinary Social Media Engagement

30 social media strategists, 250 social media savvy volunteers worked together for 4 weeks online - with most never meeting in person - to complete a project in the shortest possible time.

Over 1,000 pages of research have been distilled down to 4 pages formulating the core of a strategy that is geared towards two objectives: Helping businesses to significant grow their export volume and create 2 million new jobs by 2016.

Five Country Assessment

AxelS's picture
Submitted by AxelS on Thu, 2012-05-10 18:00

In order to develop a strategic social media initiative we decided to start with an assessment of 5 countries to get a status quo:
UK, France, Germans, Netherlands and Romania
---------------------------------------------
The countries where simply chosen based on available resources from those countries to volunteer.

WE NEED YOUR HELP:
=================
1) Are there any resources of demographic data that we can tap into either at the EU or within the country any of you know about

What next

DASmith's picture
Submitted by DASmith on Fri, 2012-06-08 18:17

I'd like to share some thinking that we did a little while ago about the potential for social networks and social media in changing how we engage with one another, how we might go about decision making differently and of course connect in new and inspiring ways.

Like any new tool we, on the one hand oversimplify what it is to include as many people in it as possible and underestimate the potential it has to disrupt what we do and how we do it.

Digital Agenda Assembly - Status Quo

AxelS's picture
Submitted by AxelS on Mon, 2012-04-23 12:12

I'm invited to present at the DA12 in June but so far this looks like a very confusing platform to me.

I suggest either putting some significant effort into this or move the conversation to an external platform.

REASON:
I see a variety of random content contribution, things I read a million times in the past 6 years, disconnected from any objective. All this content can be found on more than a million forums and groups. Why this redundancy?

Usage Guides for SocialMedia

Maripuchi's picture
Submitted by Maripuchi on Wed, 2012-06-06 10:57

There are a lot of Public Administrations & Companies that don't jump into Socialmedia just because they don't feel confident with the means.
Just as there are style guides for some of the major newspapers, it would be interesting to create a UE guide that includes guidelines and recommendations for the creation and management of socialmedia accounts in the different networks. Maybe sectorialized...
