E-commerce

Are you one of the 40% of Europeans who purchases online each year? Online shopping and services can mean better choice, easier to use, easier to compare prices: all in all, better value for consumers. But some will worry about issues like, how can I pay for my product safely? If it’s a physical product, will it be delivered in time (and intact)? And what do I do if there’s a problem with the order? Others, unable to find the content they want lawfully, may turn to illegal content.

In January the Commission launched its action plan to double the volume of e-Commerce and the share of Internet economy on GDP in the EU by 2015. We’ll do this by making it easier, more transparent and more trustworthy to buy online. There are many strands to this action plan, we focus on two specifics:

1) Consumer trust: the workshop will address different aspects of consumer trust on e-commerce (consumer rights, information and redress), with a particular focus on trustmarks.

UPDATE: We have now launched a dedicated space with a discussion paper about trustmarks - have your say!

2) Payments: the workshop will follow up on the results from the consultation launched by the Commission Green Paper on payments (COM(2011)941), with a particular focus on mobile commerce and payments.

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Digital Agenda Assembly (here is more information about the workshop). Based on the quality of contributions, 6 online participants will be invited to the Assembly.

How can investment in E-commerce help creating jobs and fight unemployment?

griff's picture
Submitted by griff on Tue, 2012-06-12 09:15

"The Internet economy generates 2.6 new jobs for every job lost and helps reduce the effects of isolation for a number of rural areas"

(source - creating trust in the digital single market http://ec.europa.eu/internal_market/e-commerce/docs/communication2012/CO... )

Do you have e-commerce specific examples you can share? Do you agree with this statement?

Cross-Border E-Commerce and Security in Online Shopping

yStats.com's picture
Submitted by yStats.com on Thu, 2012-06-07 11:22

With the increase in the numbers of online shoppers across Europe, cross-border E-Commerce is becoming more important for both the consumers and the retailers.
However, companies face many challenges when pushing cross-border E-Commerce, i.e. they would have to build brand awareness and face market entry costs.
From the consumer perspective, even in Europe, there is still a large number of consumers that are afraid of online fraud, preventing them from online shopping. A Europe-wide mandatory online shop security accreditation system might be the answer.

Commerce is a core fabric of any society. As such is it not question of commerce or not - but how we utility digital support to improve commerce.

And the potiential for economics growth through improving the commecial processes are almost endless - the potential for mass-producing individual solutions that can even upgrade post-sales & re-cycling hold huge promisses for less and more sustainable ressources provding more and better customised Value.

Where are the secure empowered payments?

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Sat, 2012-05-26 03:32

There is a lot of enthusiasm on mobile and other payments.

But show me just one way available for empowered citizens to pay without they and the provider loosing data control, ie. without linking who with what to a 3rd party?

Politely - the enthusiam is not about value creation, but about the expectation of new ways to control, profile and manage citizens through infrastrcuture.

Instead of value creation, it focus on establishing market controls for profits through distorting markets which actually destroy overall market value creation and thus DECREASE growth.

Confidence between ICT suppliers and SME customers (BtoB): a Third specific on the Action Plan ?

damien.jacob's picture
Submitted by damien.jacob on Fri, 2012-05-25 13:24

There is a lack of confidence between ICT suppliers and their SME customers (BtoB market) : Who has not heard of businesses complaining of being insufficiently informed by their ICT service provider of the terms governing the transfer of intellectual property rights or the amounts of recurrent costs, that have been hogtied to a solution and a supplier who fails to meet their needs and requirements, or that are even left completely abandoned in cases where their service provider goes bankrupt...

The Digital Markets Frameworks needs strengthening

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-25 08:46

The raison d'etre of EU is the internal market realising that geopolitical power and stability depends critically on a strong economy.

HOWEVER - EU has consistently failed on the new requirements of Digital markets turning it into a bureaucratic noightmare for all while competitiveness have been dropping like a stone.

We should actually sat markets instead of "digital market" as almost all physical trade and flows today are controlled in digital transactions and rightfully so - PROVIDED THE DIGITAL MARKETS WORK.

Low Value Payments - the 'elephant in the room' for 2012

nebo.d's picture
Submitted by nebo.d on Thu, 2012-05-24 11:31

I am delighted to see that the European Commission is driving this vitally important initiative to push electronic payment and innovation in the region. At Cardis International we have developed technology aimed at opening access to the very large, mostly cash, low value payments (LVP) market. There are an estimated 170 billion cash retail purchases below €20 being made annually in the EU at an average value per transaction of €5. This represents a significant growth opportunity for banks, processors, payment schemes, mobile operators and merchants.

Security of mobile devices, applications and transactions

eurosmart's picture
Submitted by eurosmart on Wed, 2012-05-23 16:55

Mobile devices like smartphones and tablets have been conquering the market over the past 5 years. Consequently, a large amount of user transactions have been moved from PC-based environments to mobile devices. This includes banking, trading, shopping, eGovernment as well as other security sensitive procedures. As outlined in the recent European Commission communication related to eCommerce, the usage of online services and eCommerce opens up a huge business potential. Security and interoperability are key factors in deploying those services successfully.

Trustmarks

AnkaL's picture
Submitted by AnkaL on Mon, 2012-05-07 12:07

I'd like add on trustmarks which are used on websites to increase sales. We all need some regulation in this area.
EU has so many different nations speaking different languages, countries have different regulations... It makes it harder when we try to establish one well functioning Digital Single Market.

Boosting trust in e-commerce

EMOTA's picture
Submitted by EMOTA on Tue, 2012-05-15 12:47

EMOTA represents the e-commerce sector in Europe, and has represented distance sellers for more than 30 years. Many EMOTA members and some EMOTA business partners have developed well recognised trustmarks and quality labels, often attached to consumer complaint handling mechanisms, as a competitive, added value service aimed to boost online trade. We have noticed the increasing interest in online trustmarks as a possible solution to boost the confidence of those consumers that have not shopped online yet and hesitate to do so because of fears of going away empty-handed.

The Security Objective – Transaction Isolation

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 08:35

Security is rapidly eroding everywhere and we need to rethink security in a fully networked environment where perimeter security fails, e.g. even recent US Millitary statement to US congress.

Instead we need to change to a Security by Design paradigm where each transaction or context is logically isolated from all others.

E.g. Cloud security is non-existing and is theoretically impossible due to the nature of the technology – the benefits comes on the expense of security - so transactions has to be secured OUTSIDE cloud.

Why should payments dis-empower consumers and providers?

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Wed, 2012-06-13 09:34

I looked at your writing here
http://oakhallventures.com/mobile-money/

What is screaming loud is the absence of digital cash.

We are - as society - making a fundamental failure here as we are creating infrastructure that inherently, without choice, lead to

a) some commercial player in infrastructure intermediating or at least becomming intravenous part in all society value transactions.

b) all citizens and companies are dis-empowered.

Being the fourth largest city in the world with over 10 million people, Jakarta - the capital city of Indonesia - has 10 percent of its population living under the poverty line.

Children are the first ones to suffer.

Poverty means little access to education and lack of education results to a non-existent future for these children
Since 2006 the Art of Living Foundation took up the Tunas Pelangi Bangsa Project. It provides basic necessities such as daily food, school uniform, shoes, books and pen to around 185 children.

icon What is DA2MNT?

God bless you in this day, renew your mind and discover God’s hidden realm of fascination and truth (DA2MNT). He is with you here. Be bold and believe because you are just like He is in the world. The Lord Jesus Christ has overcome the world. This current world that you see all around you is passing away…

It is vital for God’s people to shine in the world in these last days..on the web and everywhere, that we may cast out the darkness. The darkness will continue to increase in the world, but God’s people can thrive in the Mountain of God, which is far better than the land of Goshen in ancient Egypt. If you haven’t read about the Daniel:2 Mountain of God, or come to a revelatory understanding of its meaning, I want to implore you to rediscover yourself in this place.

"Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways" (Isaiah 2:3).
