High-speed connections

This workshop will discuss business models and cost reduction measures which could foster the deployment of high speed broadband infrastructures.

  • With regard to cost reduction, an official Public Consultation has been launched on an EU Initiative to Reduce the Cost of Rolling Out High Speed Communication Infrastructure in Europe. To accompany this, on this platform we started crowdsourcing ideas to reduce the costs of broadband rollout. Publish your ideas in the dedicated space!
  • With regard to NGA investment models, we discuss exemplary case studies to thrash out the pros and cons of different NGA investment models and to stimulate a discussion about their pivotal commercial, financial and regulatory features. Which cases should be looked at and replicated across Europe? Read up and comment on the cases of ReggefiberSTOKAB and Portugal Telecom!

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Digital Agenda Assembly.

Netcitizenship for encouraging safe online surfing

Because we are convinced of the wealth of benefits of the internet, for education and share of knowledge, for social relationship, for business, for democracy and transparency and much more,
Because we are aware of the potential harms of the internet,
Because we drive our cars despite all road accidents, after safety measures and appropriate education,
Because we want our children safe online,
Because parents need to be there to keep their kids online,
Because they are so much to do online,

Crowdsourcing ideas to reduce the costs of broadband rollout

On April 27th, the EC launched a public consultation seeking views on how to cut the costs of setting up new networks for high speed internet in the EU. In particular, the Commission wants to explore how to reduce the costs associated with civil engineering, such as the digging up of roads to lay down fibre, and which can account for as much as 80% of the total cost.

Not so bad - at least for some countries

Earlier this month, the World Economic Forum published its Global Information Technology Report 2012 (http://www3.weforum.org/docs/Global_IT_Report_2012.pdf)
It shows top-10 rankings for the Northern countries in Europe (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway), both on the global Networked Readiness Index as on the Infrastructure & Content Pillar - Sweden being the number 1 in both fields.
It shows again how difficult it is to work out a general approach for all countries in Europe or in the EU.

High Speed Connection - What are the Benefits?

dacromar's picture

What are your top 10 reasons for everyone having a high speed connection to the Internet?

While it sounds obvious to many of us there is a huge community of citizens that have no idea what they are missing.

I despair when I read of the PR claims of incumbents and providers of another x 1000 homes and business premises having been "passed" by our fibre!

This weeks announcements by Microsoft and now Google of their "Drives" in the Cloud offerings are a compelling reason to get yourself a high speed connection.

How can we bring high speed connections to rural areas?

conder's picture
Submitted by conder on Fri, 2012-04-13 09:19

There is a lot of debate in the UK especially about whether urban dwellers should 'subsidise' the rollout of 'superfast' broadband to rural areas.

UK Government has made funding available through the Digital Switchover fund and BDUK to help counties put in some infrastructure to help the final third.

It is now looking like this funding is going to be used to bring slightly faster speeds to those who already have a connection.

Women in ICT

There are many women in ICT who fall under the radar. They do not have job titles or salaries. What is being done to promote their work in the EU? What recognition do they have? The answer is NONE.
We have a retired ICT school manager who is masterminding our call centre for our community network. She works as a volunteer, she is doing sterling work. Her skills should be shared, but how to do it?
Any comments appreciated...

New European standards for new optical technologies

The incentive for investing in a network infrastructure is determined by the potential Return On Investment (RoI) in the infrastructure over the lifetime of investment. This depends on the difference between the revenues generated from the services delivered and the cost (capital, operating, and maintenance) of delivering the services over the infrastructure.

1. Level playing field. Encourage member states to drive their 2020 Digital Agenda programmes with a "hardest first" agenda - This encourages new competition as the final few % is where the traditional business model fails, so subsidising incumbents is least value for money - it also forces the incumbents to use more of their own money to reach further, defending their territory

What rules for next generation networks?

eusebiofg's picture

In anticipation of the huge investments planned for the next generation networks (NGM), requires a new analysis of the Access Directive (2002/19/EC)[1], to see if this directive will ensure that these investments are really for the benefit of European citizens , or if specific rules are needed for operators that will receive funding.

If any of you have any good videos of about a minute in length please use the 'Inspiring Videos' link at the top of this page and post one for us.
If you care to you could also vote for this one http://daa.ec.europa.eu/inspiring_videos/display/24868 which shows a community laying its own fibre ducting. (Have to be upfront here, its actually my community, but its well worth a quick look)
