High-speed connections

This workshop will discuss business models and cost reduction measures which could foster the deployment of high speed broadband infrastructures.

  • With regard to cost reduction, an official Public Consultation has been launched on an EU Initiative to Reduce the Cost of Rolling Out High Speed Communication Infrastructure in Europe. To accompany this, on this platform we started crowdsourcing ideas to reduce the costs of broadband rollout. Publish your ideas in the dedicated space!
  • With regard to NGA investment models, we discuss exemplary case studies to thrash out the pros and cons of different NGA investment models and to stimulate a discussion about their pivotal commercial, financial and regulatory features. Which cases should be looked at and replicated across Europe? Read up and comment on the cases of ReggefiberSTOKAB and Portugal Telecom!

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Digital Agenda Assembly.

"Need for speed" - How much bandwith do we actually need??

tore@teleinfo.no's picture
Submitted by tore@teleinfo.no on Fri, 2012-06-15 13:01

In many broadband discussions it seems like it is taken for granted, that there is an enormous and unquestionable need for hi speed broadband "everywhere" and for "everyone" - and that the key goal therefore is to roll out hi speed/fibre based broadband as fast as possible. This view is heavily supported by the operators, and their "friends".

CapEx/user - what are the actual figures for hi speed broadband?

tore@teleinfo.no's picture
Submitted by tore@teleinfo.no on Thu, 2012-06-14 22:33

I believe the CapEx (capital expenditure) figures for rolling out hi speed broadband will vary substantially based on...

* the speed requirement (what speed do you really need - for the services that are used and will be used tomorrow?)
* the country in question (geography, population and cost level will heavily influence on the chosen roll out solution)
* the chosen technique (DSL, cable, fibre or mobile broadband)

I believe it is of utmost importance to have a solid grip on these factors and figures before jumping to roll out conclusions.

The European Commission has just published this public consultation:
http://ec.europa.eu/competition/consultations/2012_broadband_guidelines/...

1- Do you think such guidelines might foster the deployment of NGA networks in Europe?

2- Which further changes would you suggest?

What rules for next generation networks?

eusebiofg's picture

In anticipation of the huge investments planned for the next generation networks (NGM), requires a new analysis of the Access Directive (2002/19/EC)[1], to see if this directive will ensure that these investments are really for the benefit of European citizens , or if specific rules are needed for operators that will receive funding.

How can investment in High speed Internet connectivity help creating jobs and fight unemployment?

conder's picture
Submitted by conder on Mon, 2012-06-11 18:33

This could possibly be the last new discussion on this group as the assembly draws near. Could we please have everyone's thoughts on how robust, fast and dependable connectivity can create employment, stimulate formation of SMEs, and reduce unemployment by enabling people to work from home? Please continue to follow previous posts and add your comments too.
Thanks all!

Mobile BB is the solution to máximum extensión of Hspeed

Alfonso Alonso Durán's picture
Submitted by Alfonso Alonso Durán on Sat, 2012-06-09 23:14

The high speed debate is mostly fiber centric , but the solution to cheapper and quicker deployment is the mobile BB solution. The 3g 4G and future 4.5g technologies will allow to provide 30 and 100 Mb at 1/50 of fiber deployment. And the microwaves wimax tecno with the exixting fiber deployment could solve the transport needs.
The fiber deployment is very expensive and could create a bigger digital divide because a lot of rural and poorer people will not have cocerage as consecuence of capex and opex.
Last mile radio access is the solution.

the business case for ubiquitous FTTP?

tref's picture
Submitted by tref on Wed, 2012-06-06 18:21

In the UK BT says there is no business case for the rollout of ubiquitous Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). I believe it.

The government says there is a business case for HS2 rail link between London and Birmingham (and beyond). I probably believe it. After all according to Justine Greening, the Transport Secretary, ”HS2 will deliver four pounds of benefit for every additional pound spent compared to a new conventional-speed line, as well as driving regeneration, creating jobs and providing our country with the infrastructure we need to compete in the 21st century.” It must be true.

Broadband inclusive approach

The EU must not neglect the inclusion of all territories in broadband networks. In rural and mountain areas, the broadband rollout can provide with an excellent opportunity to fill the gap with urban areas in the provision of public services. Telemedicine or E-government devices can help disadvantage territories to offer better services to their citizens.

What questions remain unanswered

Charles Watt's picture

For the last 15 years I have watched the debate on FTTx go round and round in circles- particulalry in the UK. I see them repeated in this blog. So having heard all the arguments time and time again, what questions genuinely remain unanswered before we DO something about it. While we debate other countries have just gone ahead and done it because they see this issue as impacting their economic competitiveness, their quality of life etc.

High Speed Connection - What are the Benefits?

dacromar's picture
Submitted by dacromar on Fri, 2012-04-27 00:50

What are your top 10 reasons for everyone having a high speed connection to the Internet?

While it sounds obvious to many of us there is a huge community of citizens that have no idea what they are missing.

I despair when I read of the PR claims of incumbents and providers of another x 1000 homes and business premises having been "passed" by our fibre!

This weeks announcements by Microsoft and now Google of their "Drives" in the Cloud offerings are a compelling reason to get yourself a high speed connection.

Cost Reduction: Shared infrastructure savings

pdfoley's picture
Submitted by pdfoley on Tue, 2012-05-15 13:56

A CSMG report (stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk/binaries/consultations/wla/annexes/csmg.pdf page 95) provides an interesting overview of the different costs of duct access vs. new build - Costs per premises connected appear to be very similar (at about GBP 180 per premises) in urban areas with more than 500 households. If fewer than 500 houses are connected using existing duct access for deployment appears to be more economic. Does anyone else know of other studies that provide data for duct access vs. new build?

Blisteringly fast Internet speeds, more robust connections and a big increase in network capacity at little extra cost, even in rural areas?

http://ec.europa.eu/information_society/digital-agenda/research/optical_...

This is the future. The question remains, how can Europe facilitate the roll out when the incumbents have such a stranglehold on the politicians?

Conclusions from DAA WS on Broadband, actions proposal

Rural is  falling behind, loosing strength and relevance in the discussion.
No one, from TELCO to analyst said there is a problem in big cities because they are profitable. If so why is there a need to discuss more or less regulation, why is there a need to impose, using regulation, some fibre sharing.

The focus must be open ducts to every operators, from incumbent to new telco ... Every single duct must be shared, in the telco sector and multi-sector.

Profitable fibre operators - what do they look like?

tore@teleinfo.no's picture
Submitted by tore@teleinfo.no on Sun, 2012-06-17 21:24

From various discussions in this forum, and other places around the globe, it seems like the rolling out of hi speed internet (preferably by rolling out fibre) needs additional gov't funding to take place.

I wonder - can we have some examples of profitable fibre operators?? What are they doing right - and what should other fibre operators do to become (more) profitable? What are the KPIs (Key Perfomance Indicators...) for these operators on for instance..:

Being the fourth largest city in the world with over 10 million people, Jakarta - the capital city of Indonesia - has 10 percent of its population living under the poverty line.

Children are the first ones to suffer.

Poverty means little access to education and lack of education results to a non-existent future for these children
Since 2006 the Art of Living Foundation took up the Tunas Pelangi Bangsa Project. It provides basic necessities such as daily food, school uniform, shoes, books and pen to around 185 children.

icon What is DA2MNT?

God bless you in this day, renew your mind and discover God’s hidden realm of fascination and truth (DA2MNT). He is with you here. Be bold and believe because you are just like He is in the world. The Lord Jesus Christ has overcome the world. This current world that you see all around you is passing away…

It is vital for God’s people to shine in the world in these last days..on the web and everywhere, that we may cast out the darkness. The darkness will continue to increase in the world, but God’s people can thrive in the Mountain of God, which is far better than the land of Goshen in ancient Egypt. If you haven’t read about the Daniel:2 Mountain of God, or come to a revelatory understanding of its meaning, I want to implore you to rediscover yourself in this place.

"Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways" (Isaiah 2:3).
