Security

The trust and security pillar of the Digital Agenda for Europe aims at enhancing cyber security preparedness, combating cyber-crime and cyber attacks, ensuring data protection and safer internet for children. Building on this, the upcoming European Strategy for Internet Security to be adopted in the third quarter of 2012 aims at ensuring and promoting an open, transparent, secure and resilient global digital ecosystem benefitting EU citizens, businesses and public administrations. Opportunities and funding schemes encouraging the deployment of appropriate technological solutions, which respond both to present and future security challenges, will be further put forward in Horizon 2020 and the Connecting Europe Facility.

NEW ONLINE CONSULTATIONS:

Towards a European Strategy for Internet Security - Have your say!

Survey: How to Stimulate Investments in Secure & Trustworthy ICT?

The workshop will identify priorities and actions needed in the field of Internet Security in Europe. In preparation, we'd like to collect the maximum number of insightful ideas and inspiring initiatives on the key questions:

     1) What are, in your opinion, the current strengths and weaknesses of the European ICT industry, in terms of supplying security products and implementing security features in their products?
     2) What are the barriers to a vibrant European ICT security market?
     3) What could be the incentives for more European investment in ICT security to limit risks? What are the obstacles to preventive actions - from the point of view of the user, as well as the supplier?
     4) What measures would you suggest to stimulate further European innovation and competitiveness in this specific sector, including for reducing the research-market gap?

By providing your comments to the questions, you have the opportunity to contribute to identify those measures which would further foster innovation in the European ICT security and promote the research results in trustworthy ICT so that they are widely adopted across the digital single market.

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Assembly.

Easy to use mechanisms enabling awareness & privacy control

One of the problem with privacy on the Internet is that people had a false sense of security originating from the difficulty:
* To assess which personal information is being disclosed
* To configure the access to personal information (for the normal citizen & not only the Rocket scientist)

The consequence is that people have been put in difficult situation (several cases of people being fired have even been report) in relation of posting information that they thought were restricted to a close circle, and that actually leaked much beyond.

Speaking of Privacy and Traceability

For all those interested in the economics of privacy, I suggest you look at http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/collusion/demo/

This add-on for Firefox shows exactly how your information is propagated over the internet, without your knowledge. A truly mind boggling demonstration of the fact that:

If you're not paying for something, you're not the customer; you're the product being sold.

Security is so easy to circumvent

conder's picture

http://www.trefor.net/2012/05/06/how-to-bypass-the-virgin-media-web-filt...
the above post shows just how easy security is to bypass, and its vital that policy makers find out more about the internet before they pass stupid laws about it... the UK is particularly bad at giving politicians the correct information to make informed decisions. The Digital Economy act is a complete farce.

Focus on change instead of invention

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 11:58

Europe has losts its way. Our former strenghts where based on market value creation in constant competition.

This has been replaced by "managed citiziens and markets" which simply do not work.

My statement is not ideological but recognising the basic fact that especially bureuarats and commercial infrastructures foicus on controlling and preventing innovation rather than value creation.

Stanards are not designed to facilite change and innovation but to establish lock-in and kartel structures e.g. payments, mobile phones and eSignature.

From Web 2.0 to Citizen Empowerment

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 11:10

Web 2.0 turned out to be a tool to control citizens and society processes instead of empowering people and supporting growth.

Social media need to grow up and deal with the serious distortions originating the the flawed approaches that systematically dis-empower people and companies to behavioural-based profilling and system attacks from infrastructure providers pushing themselves into valuechains. They take control of and spy on relationships basically trough abusing the data from the flows.

The Security Objective – Transaction Isolation

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 08:35

Security is rapidly eroding everywhere and we need to rethink security in a fully networked environment where perimeter security fails, e.g. even recent US Millitary statement to US congress.

Instead we need to change to a Security by Design paradigm where each transaction or context is logically isolated from all others.

E.g. Cloud security is non-existing and is theoretically impossible due to the nature of the technology – the benefits comes on the expense of security - so transactions has to be secured OUTSIDE cloud.

Reducing the Research - Market Gap

prokopas's picture

The development of a vibrant EU industry could surely be propelled by the research conducted from European institutions, organizations and academia. What measures would you suggest to stimulate further European innovation and competitiveness in the ICT security sector, including for reducing the research-market gap?

SMEs Security Awareness Level

prokopas's picture
Submitted by prokopas on Wed, 2012-05-02 16:12

SMEs use a wide range IT systems. They deploy advanced security devices and countermeasures to protect their data and intellectual property. However, they fail to realize that one of the most significant IT security risk factors is the human factor and the need of training; they neglect to inform their employees on the importance of data they manage along with the potential threats and they end up with untrained users administrating enterprise data, locally or over the web.

A competitive European ICT security industry

michele's picture
Submitted by michele on Mon, 2012-04-30 21:27

In light of the comments we had so far in this Security Section, I would suggest to organize the different contributions in line with the issues that will be addressed during the workshop. This means to start developing the conversation along the line of these issues as presented above:
-Internet Security as a growth stimulator and how to foster innovation.
-Role and responsibility of key stakeholders.
-Global dimension on internet security and EU response.

Mobile Payments Race

ValidSoft's picture
Submitted by ValidSoft on Tue, 2012-09-18 13:21

My CEO wrote recently on project OSCAR and clearance from the EC (http://www.finextra.com/community/fullblog.aspx?blogid=6923). Point of interest for this group is how security could well become the key differentiator for whomever will win that race. There are lots of players out there. Often with emerging technologies, the urgency of getting product to market is not aligned with a corresponding urgency for risk-management.
