Security

The trust and security pillar of the Digital Agenda for Europe aims at enhancing cyber security preparedness, combating cyber-crime and cyber attacks, ensuring data protection and safer internet for children. Building on this, the upcoming European Strategy for Internet Security to be adopted in the third quarter of 2012 aims at ensuring and promoting an open, transparent, secure and resilient global digital ecosystem benefitting EU citizens, businesses and public administrations. Opportunities and funding schemes encouraging the deployment of appropriate technological solutions, which respond both to present and future security challenges, will be further put forward in Horizon 2020 and the Connecting Europe Facility.

NEW ONLINE CONSULTATIONS:

Towards a European Strategy for Internet Security - Have your say!

Survey: How to Stimulate Investments in Secure & Trustworthy ICT?

The workshop will identify priorities and actions needed in the field of Internet Security in Europe. In preparation, we'd like to collect the maximum number of insightful ideas and inspiring initiatives on the key questions:

     1) What are, in your opinion, the current strengths and weaknesses of the European ICT industry, in terms of supplying security products and implementing security features in their products?
     2) What are the barriers to a vibrant European ICT security market?
     3) What could be the incentives for more European investment in ICT security to limit risks? What are the obstacles to preventive actions - from the point of view of the user, as well as the supplier?
     4) What measures would you suggest to stimulate further European innovation and competitiveness in this specific sector, including for reducing the research-market gap?

By providing your comments to the questions, you have the opportunity to contribute to identify those measures which would further foster innovation in the European ICT security and promote the research results in trustworthy ICT so that they are widely adopted across the digital single market.

Join the discussion, provide your comments, and feel free to launch new themes that you feel should be discussed at the Assembly.

Bank for Women - Beyond Time!

JacintaArcadia's picture
Submitted by JacintaArcadia on Thu, 2014-01-23 21:01

I have just come from adventures albeit in the Virtual Social Media Realm of Davos Switzerland via Online Forum!

Wonderful multimedia platform, inspiring stories and kind visions for everyone to be part of The Economy Worldwide!

But I freaked out after reading what was deemed a Gender Article for shaping how women are to be in the future if they want success - it was shocking because it focussed back onto Men as the source of support!

I was furious and quickly wrote a response and it was deleted several times! But thanks to SASM Network they pushed my letter Online!

Dear Security Group Members,

The debate of last year was interesting and important to push forward the Commission’s activities in the field of Trust and Security online.

In particular, your contributions helped in the drafting of the new EU Cybersecurity plan, comprising a Cyber Security strategy and Proposal for a Directive: http://bit.ly/13cfZNq

The discussion remains open though, for the upcoming Digital Agenda Assembly that will take place in Dublin on 19-20 June 2013: http://bit.ly/13Yfp4A.

This blog is a reproduction of a comment from Pat Carroll, CEO, ValidSoft. It explains why Europol's suggested solution to cross-border card fraud (i.e. geo-blocking of EU issued EMV cards) is not the right way to go about it.

From Web 2.0 to Citizen Empowerment

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 11:10

Web 2.0 turned out to be a tool to control citizens and society processes instead of empowering people and supporting growth.

Social media need to grow up and deal with the serious distortions originating the the flawed approaches that systematically dis-empower people and companies to behavioural-based profilling and system attacks from infrastructure providers pushing themselves into valuechains. They take control of and spy on relationships basically trough abusing the data from the flows.

Focus on change instead of invention

Engberg's picture
Submitted by Engberg on Fri, 2012-05-04 11:58

Europe has losts its way. Our former strenghts where based on market value creation in constant competition.

This has been replaced by "managed citiziens and markets" which simply do not work.

My statement is not ideological but recognising the basic fact that especially bureuarats and commercial infrastructures foicus on controlling and preventing innovation rather than value creation.

Stanards are not designed to facilite change and innovation but to establish lock-in and kartel structures e.g. payments, mobile phones and eSignature.

Easy to use mechanisms enabling awareness & privacy control

nabeth.thierry's picture
Submitted by nabeth.thierry on Mon, 2012-05-07 15:09

One of the problem with privacy on the Internet is that people had a false sense of security originating from the difficulty:
* To assess which personal information is being disclosed
* To configure the access to personal information (for the normal citizen & not only the Rocket scientist)

The consequence is that people have been put in difficult situation (several cases of people being fired have even been report) in relation of posting information that they thought were restricted to a close circle, and that actually leaked much beyond.

Trade-offs and Security Challenges in the Cloud

Penta_Fronimos's picture
Submitted by Penta_Fronimos on Tue, 2012-04-24 12:52

Less operational cost VS security and data privacy protection. Could the cloud ever become an IT infrastructure at least the same secure as enterprise silos or the monetary profit of this new business trend shall supplant security and privacy requirements of core IT systems? What is the role of legal regulations and how could they assure a secure and vital cloud environment full of personal and enterprise confidential data?

Vibrant European ICT security market?

uzurutuza's picture
Submitted by uzurutuza on Thu, 2012-06-07 11:06

Do you agree with me that the ideal situation would be not having ICT security market?

Do we want to strength the security market, or what we pursue is minimizing security risks? Europe needs to find solutions for reducing a huge part of the security problems from the root.

Most of the security threats when talking about vulnerabilities, exploits, malware, and a big etc. come from poorly written software. This is something with not so difficult remediation. Regulation, standardization and education comes to my mind.

economics of privacy

nabeth.thierry's picture
Submitted by nabeth.thierry on Sun, 2012-05-13 20:34

It seems to be clear that the access to personal data represents an important economic value, for instance by allowing to personalize advertising (cf. Google and Facebook).

It may be a good idea to in the discussion to have an economic & business perspective on this matter.

An interesting article on this topic:

Which security concern keeps you up at night?

prokopas's picture

Assuming each one of us can be seen under different roles such as citizen, patient, employee, employer and so on. For each one of these roles which security aspect do you consider most valuable? More importantly how could European Union appease those concerns?
