Dear DAA community, I hope debate can go on on this platform and I am interested in keeping it active, with particular reference to the Cloud group that I followed up more closely. With the European Cloud Strategy to be released soon (probably after summer holidays) and the recent publication of the ARTICLE 29 DATA PROTECTION WORKING PARTY Opinion 05/2012 on Cloud Computing, the European effort on Cloud has just begun and it will be value added for Europe to keep the DAA wide, interested and active community alive to continue the collaboration through open and fruitful discussion. Meanwhile, enjoy summer!

Outline from the report
"Despite the acknowledged benefits of cloud computing in both economic and societal terms, this Opinion outlines how the wide scale deployment of cloud computing services can trigger a number of data protection risks, mainly a lack of control over personal data as well as insufficient information with regard to how, where and by whom the data is being processed/sub-processed."

Characteristic of the debate is how cloud services providers continue to ignore security, rights and economics in favour of non-sustainable "policy"-approaces and short-term gains !?

Cloud has a lot of potential, but why risk it due to focus on clearly non-sustainable models?

The consequences is pushing cloud in the same corner as GMO, nuclear power and RFID, where the failure to address the real problems with usable technologies have created massive resistance.
