Great question. I was speaking about social media in age care in last year. The essence is this:
1) Seeking a place is much easier and provides much better insight in existing experience
2) Elderly trained to use social media are so much more likely to overcome depressions or frustrations as they are so well connected to the world and existing company from sometimes very diverse geographies
And a bunch of other advantages.

Empowered is being provided the tools to mine information and communicate with others.
Everyone can do work that in the past was only done by professionals. (up to a certain level).
Patient empowerement in return empower organizations to be more customer-centric, have shorter development cycles (by involving patients/stakeholders), better to-market rates (patients/stakeholders can be turned in advocates) and so on.
We are involved in two
We are involved in two projects (Carer+ and Carenet, both EC funded projects) relating to digital technologies (wider than just social media) and carers, caregivers and care recipients. Both projects have only just started and will explore over the next two/three years this whole area. I will be able to put links to the projects in the coming months, but we are still in the kick off phase.
