"Security and firewalls are vital to protect the digital society's economy, but at the same time we must be aware of the potential ‘dual use’ of security systems: they should not be misused as a barrier to development through freedom online. Therefore, an accurate knowledge of security’s importance as a prerequisite stepping stone must be spread, and built in from the start by all positive actors to prevent any misuse " ENISA’s (http://www.enisa.europa.eu) Executive director, Professor Udo Helmbrecht commented on after the Stockholm Internet Forum (http://www.stockholminternetforum.se/).

How can security's importance be spread and how can we prevent misuse?

Security is an important issue - but the key here is the balance between legitimate use of open discussion and criminal abuse of cyber space. It is important to develop methods to measure the trustworthiness of actors (humans, applications, web-sites) in this space, so that one can match the information disclosed and actions taken to the appropriate level of trust. We are soon to start research in this area in a new project investigating trust and trustworthiness. Watch this space for more details.
