Extraordinary Social Media Engagement
30 social media strategists, 250 social media savvy volunteers worked together for 4 weeks online - with most never meeting in person - to complete a project in the shortest possible time.
Over 1,000 pages of research have been distilled down to 4 pages formulating the core of a strategy that is geared towards two objectives: Helping businesses to significant grow their export volume and create 2 million new jobs by 2016.
This would not be possible without social media. Not only from a technology point of view but also from a psychological and interrelationships point of view.

I think your promotional
I think your promotional skills is a key motivator for people to contribute because they know there is a publicly visible reward ! Thanks for your support.
Diving deeper into what has
Diving deeper into what has happened during the last four week - e.g. by visiting the Facebook group of this project -www.facebook.com/groups/daeurope - makes those numbers even more impressive. Completing this enormous project in such a short period of time is almost impossible unless truly engaged experts team up. But enthusiasm alone won't do the job!
Working on a social media strategy needs a solid methodology - on any scale that is and even more when being crowd sourced and pan-european! The holistic view to social media taught by the Social Media Academy Palo Alto, USA provides such unified methodologies that enable people scattered across Europe who never have met before to work together seamlessly. A purpose driven, cross functional approach to social media engagement starting with a four quadrant assessment and a SWOT analysis which will then be followed by a solid strategy framework focusing on goals, mission, benefits, action, a program and of cause reporting.
Having taken part in the Social Media Academy's Strategist class I'd like to recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in further developing professional skills in all aspects of social media. You'll find more details here: www.smacad.com/index.php
Wow - thanks for the plug
Wow - thanks for the plug Olaf. I trust we will educate many European social media enthusiasts down the road and get the skills level as far up as possible. Thanks for all your support.
I’ve enjoyed the last four
I’ve enjoyed the last four weeks very much. Knowledge workers from all over Europe teamed up for the same goal. From my point of view three pillars were the basis for the results we’ve achieved so far - First “People”, second a “Unified Methodology” and third “Management”.
Getting the right people on the bus is always the crucial thing for delivering the right results – especially when deadlines are sharp and a team has to work under pressure. All were doing a great job during these four weeks for #da12social, besides their other jobs and duties. I was thrilled about the energy and motivation all people brought in.
It was very helpful to work along the first methodology “4 Quadrant Assessment”, following clear and particularly the right questions for identifying strengths and weaknesses as well as opportunities and risks. I haven’t attended the Social Media Academy, but I’ve worked a long time in management consulting and management positions, so I’m used to working along structures and methodologies. The process of the Social Media Academy is a well designed strategy development tool, which would not be something special, if it were not designed out of six years practice especially for the social media and the paradigm shift which is going on in our society. I appreciate this approach very much.
Coming to my third pillar, I have to say that it has been Management by Objectives which took place. Clear milestones and a deadline as well as deliverables and a lean project management structure lead our project. Of course you can do this only with highly motivated, disciplined and engaged people and supporting them with a proven methodology and structure.
I am really thrilled about our virtual team and I am looking forward to more of it.
Thanks for the feedback Roger
Thanks for the feedback Roger - great to hear :) Thanks again for everything you did. I'm so happy being able to work with people like you.
The SMACAD four quadrant
The SMACAD four quadrant assessment model gives a solid ground for a structured analysis for social media but also for business and competition in chosen sectors. I believe the methods, tools and ways of working supplied Axel Shultze and Social Media Academy will show astonishing results and bring up conclusions, for the five countries taking part in first round of the study, suprising even to the specialists taking part! With the structured ways of working you discover new things, even in a market that you think you knew quite well. I believe the assessment also will show that there are many similarities between the obstacles companies have to overcome for becoming successful in social media. The assessment will also give learnings by bringing up differences in business structure and competitive level between the five countries, not only relevant for social media.
Later this year we plan to start up at team for Sweden, and I'm convinced that we in this overall national assessment also will see our own market and social media in our country in new perspectives thanks to the SMACAD assessment and strategy model!
I'm glad you are building and
I'm glad you are building and leading the Swedish team in phase two. Believe it or not but since this was the first time I worked with trained strategists and other smart people who have not been in our training I realized the power of the methods for the first time after 6 years :)
Thanks Axel! Working on this
Thanks Axel! Working on this project over the last four weeks has been extraordinary: an incredible opportunity to really get to know a great number of social media professionals and gain a true measure of their knowledge, expertise and capabilities. More importantly, the level of engagement and relationships formed through this project has shown the power of crowdsourcing and will definitely have ongoing repercussions in the European social media space.
It is a great pleasure to be
It is a great pleasure to be part of the team. There is a lot of power behind crowdsourcing. It is incredible how much people can work together on the same topic even if they are far away from each other, having different cultures, languages and understanding of needs. What happened here is exactly what the EU strategy has to take care of: enabling people all over europe to work together on topics that matters to everyone´s country.
That's exactly the magic of
That's exactly the magic of Social Media!! :D
See you in Brussels guys!
Running the German business
Running the German business part of the SWOT analysis, I'd like to provide some details on the process used to look into details of GDP and GDP change for the most recent period of 2010 and 2011 while detailed data for this period is only available on a higher level of up to 10 sectors. In order to do a meaningful analysis based on 61 sectors - updates are only available up to 2009- I have gone this extra mile by using a special modeling approach. With this the making of 2010 and 2011 data down to 61 details of sectors became possible.
A similar approach was used to extend social media survey data beyond their directly available 3 sectors into the 61 level details of sectors.
Furthermore revenue data from the German statistics office allows to run an overall German business model based on 28 sectors. One can see profit and revenue distribution over sectors using dedicated graphics.
Also data from Wikipedia for the Top Hundred German Companies is available. With those data it's relatively easy to generate the top 100 German business model with profit, revenue, cost for the companies of their locations and sectors. That way, using a multidimensional approach, one get a 360° perspective of the Top Hundred German Companies.
Based on those relevant data-using profitability as a measure-digging into the appropriate social media related data provides a kind of a holistic data set.
The link of this three-minute video gives an overview.

Thanks a lot for your
Thanks a lot for your feedback Anjlee, Florian, Cristina and Hans I'm glad to see you all enjoy the experience and take something out if it for you too.
Hans, very interesting way of analyzing. I will need to know more about it as it seems to be very sophisticated.
Thanks again everybody
I worked with an outstanding
I worked with an outstanding team which produced outstanding results in a very short period of time.
What is remarkable about the results is the fact that I have never met anybody on the team in person. In fact most of the team members have never met each other.
However, I knew from the beginning that the team would deliver because I see the team members deliver on a regular basis through my interaction with the on various social media platforms.
I also knew that they would deliver quality results on time because that's their reputation in social media.
It would be a pleasure to work with any of them in the future.
